Generative AI is making waves across industries, but can ChatGPT and generative AI help mental health? At Hidden Literature, we believe that while digital tools may offer some insights, they are not a substitute for professional care or meaningful human connection.

Ahead of our next MY WORD poetry open mic in London on Tuesday 6th May 2025, we’re inviting the community to reflect on how poetry, not AI, can be a valuable form of self-care & self-expression. In line with a recent Huffington Post UK article, we agree: using ChatGPT or generative AI for therapy or emotional support is not advisable.

Instead, we encourage trying something that connects you with yourself, and others—writing poetry with a pen and paper, journaling in your notes app, or attending real-life events that foster genuine human connection.

Can ChatGPT and Generative AI Help Mental Health?

There’s growing interest in using AI mental health support tools. While some users turn to ChatGPT to help manage emotions, experts warn this reliance can increase loneliness, not reduce it. Even OpenAI stresses that ChatGPT is not designed for emotional or therapeutic use.

Human interaction is irreplaceable. Platforms like ChatGPT lack empathy, emotional nuance, and cannot understand context like a trained therapist or real person can.

Poetry as a Self-Care Practice

Rather than turning to AI for therapy sessions or poetry writing, we recommend starting simply. Grab a journal, a piece of paper, or your phone notes app. If you need prompts you can check out 30 poetry prompts shared by our founder, Ovyuki on Instagram and TikTok. You just need a moment with yourself.

Poetry is a form of connection—to self and others.

It allows us to process emotion, reflect, and sometimes discover something we didn’t know we were carrying. As noted in the Harvard Study of Adult Development, creative expression and strong social bonds are two key pillars of long-term mental health.

Poetry, Self-Care, Community, and MY WORD

The founder of Hidden Literature, Ovyuki created MY WORD as a space for the community to share, connect, and grow in a judgment-free setting. Every first Tuesday of the month, our community gathers for our open mic where we enjoy an evening of spoken word, poetry, music, and storytelling, we even heard a few jokes on stage.

This month’s theme:

Words to Grow By: Spoken Word, Music, and a Journey into Mental Health and Self-Care.

Whether you’re healing, seeking, or simply curious, we welcome you.

PLUS: We’ll be giving away self-care gifts at the event to support your well-being beyond the stage.

Location: Grow, Main Yard, 98C Wallis Rd, London E9 5LN
Time: Doors open 6:30 PM – Ends 10:30 PM

Understanding the Limitations of AI in Therapy

While AI therapy tools trend on TikTok and social media, they cannot offer the depth of professional care. They do not replace community or connection. Overreliance on such tools can actually contribute to feelings of isolation.

That’s why spaces like MY WORD exist: to gather, to share, and to experience life and its struggles together.
